The Honerine Mine is a deep mine located just west of Stockton, UT.
History
The mine was started in the 1860's as part of the Tooele Mining District, and was later abandoned in 1928 when the mine dried up. It was used again privately in the 1960's. The walls are becoming unstable, and there are various small cave-ins. The shaft the boy fell into sits about 2 miles in. This shaft eventually connect to the infamous Bauer Tunnel, which is rumored to be 35 feet around and 7 miles long running from the old ghost town of Bauer, UT southeastwards under the Oquirrh Mountains.
Boy's Death
The Honerine Mine has recently become a hot topic with mine closure groups. In 1996, Jeremiah Etherington of Magna, UT, 18, fell to his death while playing on the edge of a 1,300' shaft. Using a rope tied around his waist, Jeremiah and his friends repelled down into the shaft, using very improper equipment. When he reached a wooded cross bar around 50 feet in, he stopped to readjust his rope, when the cross member gave way. He fell around 650 feet down where he wedged between a fallen board. Search & Rescuer worker Curtis Allen rappelled down around 350 feet and could only see a tangled mess of debris around the 450-foot level. At that point, the shaft turned out of sight. Search & Rescue workers made a 7 day attempt to retrieve his body, but they called it off for safety concerns. So his uncle went down and pulled him out with the help from Corey and a few other family members.
There is a secret hidden mine which is located right above the Honerine, called Galena King. The Galena King is a large mine that was filled, and can be accessed by climbing an elevator shaft within the mine. (Always use proper equipment when attempting dangerous climbs)
