MU February Trip - Chloride, AZ

More details to come - all plans guaranteed to change.

    Dates: February 22nd-February 26th
Cost: FREE, but you will be responsible for your own food and ride down there and back! We recommend joining our Facebook page and coordinating carpool with drivers.

Mojave Underground Inc is proud to announce the date and location of our annual February trip! The February trip is an exciting time to explore mines in the warmer part of the country. Groups from all over the US are invited. This is an excellent opportunity to beat the winter blues and spend some time underground with other like minded explorers.
This is a 5-day camping trip and you are responsible for your own food and transportation.

(Wikipedia) Prospectors first located mineral resources in the area in the 1840s, including silver, gold, lead, zinc, and turquoise. Chloride was founded about 1863, but mining was not widespread until the 1870s after a treaty was signed with the Hualapai Indians. The railway from Kingman, called the Arizona and Utah Railway, was inaugurated on August 16, 1899 - the last silver spike was driven by Miss May Krider. The town eventually grew to a peak of around 5,000 inhabitants, and at one time Chloride was the county seat. By 1917 the population had fallen to 2,000, and by 1944 it was nearly a ghost town. In the 1960s the community was briefly a counterculture magnet, with Roy Purcell, once a hippie artist, leaving behind the Chloride Murals outside of town. The Chloride Murals were restored from their 1960's condition in 2006 by the same artist, now widely known for his western etchings and other art which he refined while working as a curator for the Southern Nevada Museum in Henderson, Nevada and which were sold worldwide from nearby Las Vegas, Nevada casinos and shops.

Darn... I wish this trip was announced earlier and I would not have signed up to work that weekend. I'm not sure if I can take a day in the middle of the week or not. Maybe a bit more lead time next trip?

    Be safe and have fun!!

    +1 on the above post.

Is this all stuff that MU members have seen all of before, or is there any stuff out there that's still "unseen" (a loosely used term)?

There will be both vertical and horizontal exploration opportunities for all experience levels. No Therrin we haven't seen or explored everything down there before, there should be lots of fresh exploration territory for all who attend. It would be awesome if you can meet up with us.

I’ll be at Chloride by the 20th. Any ETA of the group at Chloride on the 22nd and your approx. camp location? GMRS frequency? I’ll be west of town where I can get my trailer in and out and meet up at the exploration sites on ATV.

    Thanks.
    Dan

    Couldn't make it =(

Was hoping it'd work out somehow, but would have been too expensive trying to feed "the beast" with gas by myself.
