Oh come on...Gold Hill is almost that deep :P !!! Anyway, they say it's so hot at that depth they can only work for very short stints at a time like on the order of 20 min..

Wow, this is absolutely incredible! I have been reading articles online about this mine for the last hour, looks like a very solid operation.

http://www.basf-cc.co.za/en/news/rec...onengMine.aspx <---that's amazing. 60C (140F) rock face temperatures. I can see how only short stints are possible.

I saw a documentary on the mining at Carson City or Virginia City Nevada back during the gold rush days and they had temperatures that high. The Diamond mines in Africa also are at least that hot just because of the depth...

                  Wow!!!

Plans to deepen the mine to over 13,123 feet!!!! That is insane!
                  5,500 employees!

The maximum speed at which the cages travel is approximately 60 kilometres per hour (about 3,000 feet per minute). The cages typically have three decks, each of which holds about 40 people. Each cage holds 120 people at a time!!! That shaft has to be massive!!!

Sounds like we should cross our fingers that it will become abandoned!

I've been in Carson City for the last couple of days (for work unfortunately). There is a lot of geothermal activity in the area so I wouldn't be surprised at the high temperatures in the VC mines.

i dont know if you guys heard, but rio tinto has already invested about $500 mil into their new "resolution copper mine" in arizona (formerly the closed "magma mine"). its supposed to be pretty cool. it will have great local benefits economically ranging in the $ billions over the life of the mine. the mine's exploratory and dewatering shaft is going to be 30 feet wide and 7000 feet deep!!! oh and this is one of the smaller shafts that will be associated with the mine haha. anyway, the coolest part of the whole thing is that its the hottest AND deepest rio tinto mine that rio tinto has operated. not the hottest, nor the deepest, but the hottest AND deepest haha. i found all this info in august 2010's edition of mining engineering magazine. check it out. its a pretty gnarly article!!! i dont have a link, but you should be able to find one somewhere...

forgot to add... one of the hottest parts of the mine will hit 175 degrees F. not too shabby! haha.

Personally, I'm hoping that they plan on sending their copper concentrates to Utah to be processed at Rio Tinto's smelter that's associated with the Bingham Canyon mine...

                              Why?

Because I work in the control room of the smelter, and I'd like to have job security for at least the next 20 to 25 years.
I'd say I'm fat and out of shape, but, "round" is a shape...
