Big Cottonwood Canyons 'Lost Emma' Mine

The fame and fate of the Lost Emma mine came up in conversation this last weekend at the Mojave BBQ. I happened across my photos of it today. I haven't been to the site in a couple of years (though we had breakfast at the Silver Fork lodge yesterday and it was all I could do to stay at my seat and not run down for a look). According to Tobin they have completely reclaimed the site, the mine, the buildings, etc... all gone.

This was a more modern mine, worked majorly into the 1970's and then sporadically worked until 1989 according to the claim markers at the site. By the time I first visited the site in ~2002 it was pretty well abandoned. The mine was wide open, many tools, pumps, pipes, etc lay strewn all over the mine and the buildings were in general disrepair but completely stable. I've got some mine workings maps that we later verified were nearly 1000% accurate to the actual on the ground working, meaning little was done since the map was published in the 70's and when I visited.

Anyways, a couple of pics, I'll try and find others too.

Thanks for digging up those pictures Kurt! I can't wait to get home from work tonight for more than one reason now. (Looks like imageposter is blocked here) I am still hoping my Grandpa can find some recent photos from before the reclamation. Lost Emma was about a 7 minute walk from my family cabin.

Thats too bad, seems to be happening allover the state. You visit a really cool site and then come back and its gone. Thats why in Utah it is so important to back up your pictures, because that is usually all thats left. Ironically enough Mojave Underground was actually recently accused of being a threat to cultural artifacts by the BLM What a joke.

What was the deal there? How long ago? Are they just trying to fight MU and throwing out wild accusations?

            Kurt,

Nice pics, I know you said you might have a few more; hopefully pics of the inside of the mine as well. I've been inside of some mines in the solitude area....

I might have some from the inside that I took, I do have a couple of the inside from written source as well as a map of the workings from the 70's. I'll see what I can post up.

Haha yeah, its a conversation in progress with them. I just find it ironic that they continue to be at the spearhead of destroying mines, meanwhile accusing us of the same.

Workings maps are always the crown jewel to find in regards to mine documents.
